E-commerce websites are numerous these days. Unfortunately, even if you are lucky enough to have a beautiful E-Commerce website, the work does not stop there as you must now take care of your famous SEO.
It is critical to have an SEO strategy for your E-commerce website so that potential customers can easily find your products on search engines. The optimization of a product page is essential and that is why we are giving you 5 little big things to optimize in order to increase your visibility, and above all: generate sales!
1. Select one keyword for a product page
Appearing on the first page of Google is not easy, but for that to happen, it is important to start with a keyword research to define the SEO strategy for your E-commerce website. Indeed, Google associates a keyword expression per page. So if you have an online store, it is important to choose a keyword for each product page. This may sound ridiculous when you have a hundred products on your site, but we do not recommend that you include several keywords on one page. Our recommendation is to choose one keyword per page.
By choosing a keyword per page, you will have the opportunity to position your E-commerce website on multiple keywords for different pages. This means that you can increase your visibility on search engines. Suppose you sell different greeting cards, you can use different keywords such as: greeting cards, celebration cards or Valentine’s Day cards on different product pages.
But it would be a mistake thinking that you can appear on Google by including multiple keywords on one page. Indeed, Google’s crawlers will not understand exactly what product you want to promote on the given page. This is why your page appears in the back pages of the search engine.
2. Use Hn tags properly
An HN tag is in a web page a title that will be inserted into the HTML code like this: <h1> your title </ h1>. There are several tags that we call simply in SEO H1 and H2 that help to give a structure to a web page. Nevertheless, there are also strong tags (text formatting in bold), the header tag (header) and the footer tag (below) among others.
Why is this important? Simply because search engines crawlers (and customers) will understand the meaning of a page with its hierarchy. When Hn tags are properly optimized, the H1 tag refers to the main title of a page, and H2 tags are subtitles. It is thus essential for your page to have a consistent hierarchy with a single title in H1 and the rest of the subtitles in H2, H3, H4, etc….
For your SEO strategy to be effective for your E-commerce site, it is essential to respect these famous Hn tags because they give crawlers of search engines relevant information about the content of the page. A product page that has so many titles in H1 will not be understood by the robots and therefore will not be fully optimized for SEO.
Even without thinking about the SEO optimization of a page, a better prioritization of content will certainly be appreciated by the user because he will understand exactly if he is on a page of interest.
Adding structured data on the web page can allow search engines to display rich snippets. Rich snippets display additional information that makes descriptions even more detailed.
3. Product Description
Writing the description of your product can be long but is very beneficial for your SEO. That is why we must not rush this step. Make sure your description is original and has not been copied from another website because search engines do not like duplicate content. It is also important to give all the information that can encourage a customer to buy your product.
Again, as part of your SEO strategy, use the Hn tags in the description of your product and be sure to include your main keyword.
Finally, little big tip: write at least 300 words in order for search engines to consider that you have written interesting content (and perhaps of quality). A description of 300 words, a main keyword and a perfect hierarchy will clearly promote the ranking of your e-commerce website. For more information, please read our tips for creating SEO content.
4. Title, meta description and URL
In general, three areas in particular are not optimized properly for SEO on E-commerce websites: the title, the Meta description and the URL. These three fields are information that appears on search engines, and are the first elements of your site that a potential customer may see.
For example by using the SEO plugin by Yoast on WordPress, it is very simple to update these fields using the following instructions:
Title: Indicate a title of 55 characters; otherwise Google will cut off the end of your title.
Meta Description: Write a short summary of 150 characters including your keyword.
URL: Ideally, the URL should be short and contain the main keyword of your page.
Take the example of a My Little Big Web page on Google. Our page dedicated to Web Marketing appears on the search engine with the main title, optimized URLs with web marketing keywords, and a Meta description.
These fields are not only an indication for potential customers but also for search engines. The goal is to be clear about the product you offer and give the user the urge to click on your site rather than on the competitor’s website.
5. SEO Optimization of pictures
One of the mistakes in SEO is not optimizing the photos on E-commerce websites. Unfortunately, search engines cannot read images. Thus, it is advisable to inquire ALT tags to your photos. If these tags are entered correctly, search engines will understand what is the subject of your image, which will allow your photos to appear in Google Images, for example.
With our 5 little big tips, we hope that you will get an effective SEO strategy for your e-commerce website. Follow our tips and your product pages might appear on the first pages of search engines.
