SEO experts: Watch out for scams

The last few years have been seen an explosion in the number of SEO experts or rather people claiming to be experts in the field of SEO. The competition between companies looking to improve their SEO on Google has increases SEO deals that accompany many (sometimes meaninglessly) promises. My Little Big Web has decided to lay the foundation by providing the answers to those planning to go through the services of an SEO expert. In this article, we’re not going to reinvent the wheel but simply dot our i’s and cross our t’s as to what a real SEO expert is.

An SEO expert, what’s that?

An SEO expert is someone who knows (in part) the criteria, or rather the guidelines imposed by Google to properly reference and index the website. Indeed, Google ranks its search results according to specific criteria so as to offer Internet users the most relevant results in record time. These criteria are neither mysterious nor complex but they are numerous and they must be treated with caution because a bad SEO can further harm your natural referencing, which won’t do anything to help your positioning.

An expert should be able to understand both the Google bots (sometimes called crawlers) but also the objective of the website to help you gain positions in the natural results for specific keywords.

It is important to distinguish the real SEO expert from those who just want to sell you SEO. SEO is not something tangible like a product or even something visible like a website. SEO still remains a poorly mastered discipline by most businesses, even if they know that a good SEO strategy is very important to generate qualified traffic to their website.

However, it is quite easy to distinguish between an SEO expert and an SEO scammer, even by the way they talk about the subject.

An SEO scammer often has a poor mastery of SEO, and has some basic notions acquired by browsing a few things like ”How to improve page rank”,” Improve SEO” or ”What is SEO?” But they do not truly understand what they have read. They know however just enough to sell their services or those to company they work for. Overall, they will promise you what you want to hear: a top spot on Google in record time, in a sustainable manner and using the keywords you choose. It will only be after a few months that you will notice the difference between what you were sold and actual results.

You’ll quickly find that they are very vague when talking about the techniques used to position your site. Most of the time, they will cite technical terms that will strengthen their credibility (in the eyes of those who are not knowledgeable in the domain) so you get the feeling that they are a real ‘SEO Expert’.

The real SEO expert will in turn take much more cautious in their “promises.” Moreover, they won’t likely make you any promises right away, and repeated that SEO takes time because they must first study how long your site has existed and what has already been done. If the site is relatively new, the expert will analyze the SEO of your competitors because they are the ones who occupy the positions you are applying for on Google.

If you question them about their techniques, they will tell you that SEO is all about content, content and more content. Therefore, if your site is small in content, they will initially advise you to create (better too much than not enough) and will then explain how they will optimize it.

They will seek to explain how a search engine works to make you a little more independent or at least so that that you understand why a good SEO strategy takes time to implement.

How to choose an SEO expert

Most of the time, people will look ask around to see if someone they know knows about SEO concepts (without being an expert) to ask how to optimize their site (before their delegate this task if possible). We also find this reflex when it comes to designing a website because they’re often looking to save on the required budget (this can cause other problems, but that is not the subject of this article).

If you do not know any SEO expert in your area, you’re going to do what seems most logical: type ‘SEO expert’ or ‘SEO agency’ in Google and see what comes up. You then contact 5 or 6 agencies and compare the answers. This is when you will receive the SEO agency responses that will make you wonder if you’ve asked the same thing to each of them as the answers (especially prices) are going to be VERY different.

Why such a difference in price?

The price difference between the SEO agencies you contact is mainly due to the following reasons:

  • All SEO agencies do not have the same hourly rate.
  • All agencies are not the same size. An independent SEO expert knows that it’s sometimes advantageous to present themselves as an agency if they want to be taken seriously or to have a chance to land a big contract.
  • All agencies do not necessarily carry out SEO. Yes, you read correctly! Some agencies specialize in web design or SEM (search engine marketing) pass off as an SEO agency to land potential contracts. If a customer wants to redo his website but also implement an SEO strategy, they will go through an external provider (another partner agency or an independent freelancer) to fill the role. This practice is not bad as the SEO optimization will be done in any event and the customer will keep the same contact. However, the final price may be higher because the agency had to hire another agency.
  • All agencies do not offer the same SEO Whereas some companies will be content to stuff your keyword content and register your site on various free directories, others will offer you a complete strategy from creation of products to relay on external sources through the complete optimization your site.

But then how do I choose an SEO expert!


Everything that has been written above is fine, but it does not answer the actual question. Simply put, you should choose the SEO expert who seems to be the most honest and competent based on your feelings. Yes this may seem a bit of a simplistic answer but yet it is the best way to choose. In all cases, you will not know if the person you choose will bring what he has promised.

You can of course ask for examples of SEO strategies they have already implemented and the results they obtained (that is also highly recommended) but there is no guarantee that everything will work as planned.
