Is an SEO strategy enough?

As an SEO agency offering referencing services, we often receive calls from potential customers telling us they want to appear on the first page of Google. For a restaurant for example, they wish to occupy the top of the search results using keywords such as Montreal restaurant, best restaurants in Montreal. Since SEO strategy is our specialty, we do our best to respond to such wishes, but such wishes cannot be fulfilled that easily.

Let’s take the example of the keyword Montreal restaurant. You have a delicious restaurant in Montreal and you want your website to appear on the first page of Google, because obviously this is the place that you deserve. Let’s see what appears on Google when we write that keyword.

You’ve also noticed: the first results do not apply to the pages of restaurants directly. The published links are guides or lists of restaurants; and links appearing above are disseminated through the scores of different restaurants. What are we trying to say? SEO is not an easy thing as it does not only depend on us, despite the quality of our strategies.

What is happening on Google?

First, there is more and more content every day on the Internet (and therefore on Google), which makes it increasingly complex for SEO. Google therefore has a lot of content to analyse and use to meet the expectations of users. Very often, the consumer likes to have a choice, and that is why such results appear on Google when looking for a restaurant in Montreal. We like to read reviews and ensure maximum quality of a restaurant before going there.

Above all, we must remember that 90% of Google’s revenue comes from online advertising. It is therefore necessary to face the fact that sometimes it is inevitable for a customer to have to pay to appear on the first page of Google. As you can see from the screenshot below, the first ad on the right hand column is actually a paid advertisement. This restaurant has therefore not waited to appear in the top organic results through SEO strategy.

Are SEO strategies useless?

SEO strategies are obviously not useless (what would we do as an SEO agency otherwise?). SEO will always be relevant as long as the world uses search engines.

But be aware that keywords optimized for SEO, prompting for purchase, show different results, such as:

  1. The websites of major brands that are hard to beat
  2. Product pages and articles
  3. Pages of criticism and comments so as to offer users what they want to have

You should therefore not be content with a SEO strategy as such, and that’s why you have to start thinking about other three complementary strategies in order to improve your SEO:

  1. Pay for your advertising

It’s a little direct but we must admit that paid ads have their advantage. As you could see from our previous example, the announcement of the first restaurant to appear on the right column of Google was a paid advertising. In addition to this, advertising allows you to “refocus” the surfer who has already shown an interest in your website. This allows you to remain visible for a long time after the user has visited your site. This way, you stay “unforgettable” in the eyes of your audience.

  1. Create effective content

The content of a website is crucial. If you wish to be seen by Google, you must provide quality content, which will be effective for your SEO strategy. You think you have one of the best restaurants in Montreal? Then write blog articles regularly, providing culinary advice to consumers for example.

  1. Optimize your website for the web

We love Google, but your goal should not only be “I want to be on Google and that’s it! “. In itself, SEO means Search Engine Optimization, so it applies to all search engines such as Yelp, Bing or sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, YouTube and Pinterest.

For example, you enjoy creating handmade products? You have to be on Etsy in this case. Why Etsy? Because Etsy is a particularly popular online retail site in North America that specializes in personal creations. You must be on the same sites than consumers. Do not forget Pinterest’s effectiveness if you sell decorative furniture. The photos on Pinterest for personal decoration inspire more and more people.
