SEO is an increasingly competitive industry because many SEO specialists or enthusiasts have realized that business demand was growing stronger. As we can see, for some time SEO agencies have been growing everywhere and each business claims to have THE secret formula! For our part, we have no secret formula and we proclaim this clearly on our page dedicated to SEO. In this article I will explain the famous secret formulas that some SEO agencies claim to have. I would like to tell you that you will not be disappointed, but unfortunately you will be disappointed … At least, this article will allow you to pay attention to scams and be better informed about the world of SEO and SEO agencies.

The SEO secret formula does not exist!

There, I said it. I preferred to tell you this right away because I know your time is valuable. I often hear clients tell me that this or that SEO agency told them they had a secret SEO formula, a special algorithm, a contact at Google (or another big lie that no one can verify) that enables them to better position their customers (when compared to other SEO agencies). Obviously, this spiel is reserved for those who are not really knowledgeable in SEO; businesses will certainly not write this stuff publicly on their website (SEO community is small and everyone knows each other) so you should wait to go from “potential client” to “client” and realize that the famous secret SEO formula is nothing other than conventional commercial technology used to give the feeling of being a company that’s “one step ahead of its competitors. ”

Now that I have denounced this business practice, I will explain concretely how SEO works and how to get results by positioning yourself on the right keywords and following the evolution of your positioning.

Optimize your website for users and search engines

No need to get into a traffic generation strategy or link strategy if your site hasn’t been optimized beforehand (at the code level) for search engines and users. Indeed, if your site does not offer an optimal user experience and if Google does not understand the content of your website, your SEO will not be as effective. For example, if you are considering investing in your SEO but your site does not use responsive design (suitable for mobile devices), I highly encourage you to set up responsive design as this factor has enormous weight in SEO.

In all cases, any SEO expert worthy of the name will tell you that any SEO strategy begins with a website audit to identify the factors blocking your good positioning and it is not rare that many optimizations deal with the way in which your website has been coded. Site optimization at the coding level is therefore the logical first step (after an audit) in any SEO strategy.

Perform a keyword search

When you say you want to improve your ranking on Google, you’re really talking about your positioning on the search results for specific keywords. But do you know exactly what keywords to target, their search volume or level of competition? Do you know if you should use “Accounting Montreal” (if you’re an accountant) or “Accountants Montreal”?

For the answer, I suggest you to use keyword research tools. The best known and least expensive (I did not say best) is the keyword planning tool from Google Adwords. Otherwise you may also use Moz, SEMRush, Yooda Webtools or Traffic Travis as they are all very good tools.

Keep in mind that SEO means optimizing one keyword per page. You have to choose, for each page, which keyword describes it best.

SEO “secret”: build up quality content

Content is crucial. All Google searches (besides obviously generating profits) are looking for quality content. Therefore, look no further if you want to attract the attention of Google: you need to create quality content. Ideally, try to have a minimum of 400-500 words per page and focus on one topic per page for Google to understands how to process your page.

The more qualified the content that you provide to your visitors is, the more visitors stay/come back to your site and the more likely it is that Google sees and takes this account when to position your website. The quality of content creation step is imperative if you want to build a SEO strategy that works for the long term.

Create an internal linkage

The internal linkage network is when you create links between the different pages of your site. Just like external inbound links, internal links are a strong SEO indicator that Google takes into account when assessing the quality of the content of your website. Besides the fact that internal links allow you to link your pages together and show Google their relationship, they can extend the average time your visitors spend on your site and encourage them to continue their navigation and discover more of the content you’ve posted.

An inbound link is an external link from another website that leads to your website. For Google, it is a confidence indicator. It is as if the website that places a link to yours put a “like” on it, indicating to Google that it considers your site “good” enough to send traffic to it. Google will therefore take this into account and analyze the website’s reputation that uses you as an outbound link to judge its value and assess the quality of your site (yes it is a little weird but it generally works like this).

It is therefore important to have external links to increase the authority of your domain and improve your SEO. Pay attention however to the quality of the websites that send you traffic due to the possibility of getting “negative SEO“.


As I said at the beginning of this article, there is no secret formula created by SEO agencies. Only practice, quality content and time to build an effective linkage strategy. Now that you know this, you can better understand the key steps of a good SEO strategy, in the order in which you must perform them and especially the time it can take. So keep in mind that SEO takes time and it takes much less time to take the trouble to do things right from the start rather than trying to go fast and start all over for each Google update.
