Open Google, run a query from your industry, hover over the first result without clicking, and look at the address that appears at the bottom of your browser. There is a good chance it no longer points to the site named in the result, but to a Google address that will forward you there.

The change is invisible in daily use, and it says a great deal about where things are heading. The measurement of your organic visibility is changing hands. What you could once observe for yourself, you will increasingly have to ask Google for.

Three events in six weeks all point the same way. The approach had been in testing since July 2026; Google confirmed the rollout in late August, describing it as part of the technical measures it regularly deploys against abusive use of its services.

Searchers notice nothing. Anything that reads Google's results automatically, however, now has to work harder: links are no longer readable directly in the page, and each redirect has to be followed one by one, on pages that contain hundreds of them. Multiply that by the keywords you track, the cities you cover and the competitors you monitor, and the cost of collection changes order of magnitude.

Google opens its AI reports, without clicks or automated access

On August 31, 2026, Google completed the worldwide rollout of its performance report for generative features in Search Console. You can now see how often your pages appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, broken down by page, country, device and date.

The progress is real: a year ago, this visibility was completely opaque. Two absences stand out. The report carries no click data. And the generative data is not exposed in the Search Console API, which makes it impossible to feed automatically into a data warehouse or a recurring report. You can read it on screen and export it by hand, one month at a time. Google shows you the result without handing over the raw material.

The legal fight over reading search results is still open

In December 2025, Google sued SerpApi, a company that resells search results in structured form. In July 2026, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers dismissed most of the claims, holding that raw search results (URLs, snippets, factual data) are not works protected by copyright. Google filed an amended complaint on August 10, and SerpApi moved to dismiss again on August 25. The case is unresolved.

The chronology is worth laying out without jumping to conclusions: the copyright route has been stalling since July, while the technical barrier has been going up since August.

What these three moves have in common

Reading Google from the outside is getting harder, while Google expands what it publishes about you itself.

Until now, measuring organic visibility rested on a simple principle: search results were public, and therefore observable by anyone. A ranking could be confirmed. From here on, a growing share of your visibility will only be knowable through what the platform chooses to publish, in the format and over the history depth it decides.

No auditor would accept figures produced, formatted and archived by the company under review. That is the direction online visibility measurement is drifting in. Google's intent matters little here: the asymmetry alone produces the effect. Your visibility is becoming an asset whose measuring instrument Google owns, and whose readings it grants you.

Two kinds of measurement now coexist in your reports, and they are worth telling apart. The first is rented. It comes from reading search results and from the interfaces Google makes available; its continuity depends on a third party, and its history stops where the platform decides. It remains indispensable day to day, and nobody argues otherwise. The second comes from your servers, your archived exports and your CRM. Less impressive, often poorly used, it is still the only one you can build on over time.

What you still own, and what it is now worth

The most decisive part of your measurement depends on no platform at all. It depends on you, and it remains largely untapped in the small and mid-sized businesses we work with.

Your server logs record every crawler visit to your site, including the agents that feed answer engines. Nobody can take them away from you. Your Search Console exports, downloaded and archived every month, build a history that Google itself does not keep beyond sixteen months. Your forms and inbound calls say what no impression count ever will: whether that visibility produces revenue. Your branded queries measure the recognition your content builds, independently of the position it holds.

There is an immediate, low-cost project in there: start archiving now. A history cannot be reconstructed after the fact. A company that begins archiving its visibility data today will hold something in eighteen months that its competitors cannot buy. Ten minutes a month, no licence required.

What it changes in how you steer SEO

Steering an SEO strategy on an average position is becoming less and less meaningful, and not only because of the changes described above. A ranking has never paid a salary. What is changing is that it will soon be impossible to fall back on out of habit.

The bar moves toward what remains verifiable: the value of the work actually delivered on your site, and the commercial result observed at the end of it. That is the logic we apply in our engagements, steering in three-month cycles and reporting on what has been built. A visibility report that connects to no data the client owns amounts to an annotated screenshot.

What this does not mean

Three clarifications are in order.

SEO is not becoming unmeasurable. Market tools have always adapted to Google's technical barriers, and they will adapt to this one. What goes up is the cost: following redirects at scale takes far more resources than reading a page, and the difference will end up in subscription prices.

Not every surface is affected. Measuring your presence in ChatGPT or Perplexity means querying those engines directly, without going through Google's results. The constraint described here applies to one surface among several, which argues for tracking that never rests on a single source.

Finally, an honest unknown: we do not yet know whether this intermediate address changes the referral information passed to your site, and therefore your traffic statistics. To date, nobody has documented it publicly. We are watching it and will come back to it.

Do not steer on what you do not own

Faced with a measurement that is closing, the reflex is to look for a better tool to reopen it. Useful, but secondary. The real question lies elsewhere: how much of your decision-making rests today on data a third party can restrict or stop publishing without warning?

If the answer is "most of it", the problem did not start in August 2026. It was simply invisible while the data stayed available. And the only time to start building a history is before you need it.

FAQ

Will my rank tracking tools stop working?

  <g id="plus-icone-bleu" transform="translate(-16 34.569) rotate(-90)">
    <rect id="Rectangle_852" data-name="Rectangle 852" width="16" height="1" transform="translate(26.069 17) rotate(90)" fill="#12416f" stroke="#084a7b" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" stroke-width="2"/>
    <rect id="Rectangle_853" data-name="Rectangle 853" width="16" height="1" transform="translate(17.569 24.5)" fill="#12416f" stroke="#084a7b" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" stroke-width="2"/>
  </g>

  <rect id="moins-icone-bleu" width="16" height="1" transform="translate(1 1)" fill="#084a7b" stroke="#084a7b" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" stroke-width="2"/>

No. Routing through an intermediate address makes automated reading of the results heavier without preventing it: tools now have to follow each redirect instead of reading the links directly.
