But transacting doesn't mean acting without you: it's the mandate you've given it, whether narrow or broad, that determines how far it can go on its own.

The Difference from Classic AI-Assisted E-Commerce

A chatbot that recommends a product still leaves you to click, compare, and pay yourself. A transacting agent can shrink that step down to a simple cart approval, or even remove it at the exact moment of purchase, but never without your consent. On ChatGPT, for example, you still have to tap "Buy" and confirm delivery and payment details for every order, even when the agent has done all the research legwork beforehand.

Only Google's AP2 protocol offers a truly autonomous mode, called "Human Not Present": you sign a precise mandate in advance (e.g., "buy these shoes if the price drops below $100"), with biometric authentication to confirm your intent, and the agent then completes the purchase without reconfirming, but always within the strict limits of what you authorized upfront. It's this shift, between real-time approval and pre-established authorization, that truly sets agentic commerce apart from everything else, not the absence of consent.

How Does Agentic Commerce Work? The Protocols You Need to Know

Agentic commerce runs on technical protocols, standards that let an AI agent, a merchant, and a payment provider understand each other. Without them, every agent would have to negotiate case by case with every merchant site, which would be unmanageable at scale. These protocols aren't competing in a zero-sum game: UCP and AP2 are designed to interoperate, and Mastercard has confirmed it's participating in all four major standards at once. A merchant likely won't have to pick one side. They'll need to follow several standards in parallel for a few more years.

For a merchant, the most concrete consequence is this: your product listings now need to be as readable by a machine as by a human. Well-written marketing copy that's poorly structured (price, availability, variants left untagged) becomes invisible to an agent, even if it's perfect for a human reader.

OpenAI was first to take a shot at it. Shopify turned on its Agentic Storefronts feature by default for all eligible merchants selling in the United States as of March 2026, with no sign-up required. The Shopify Catalog automatically structures and pushes product data (titles, descriptions, prices, inventory, shipping) to ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta, in real time and with no app to install. Merchants don't have to choose between ACP and UCP. Shopify absorbs that technical complexity behind the scenes, notably as a development partner on Google's UCP.

One important detail for merchants: on ChatGPT, the purchase isn't completed directly inside the conversation. The customer is redirected to the merchant's own checkout, in an embedded browser or a new tab, which lines up with OpenAI's retreat from native payment described above. On Google AI Mode, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot, direct in-channel payment remains possible if the merchant enables it. No additional Shopify fees apply to these sales beyond standard processing fees.

The numbers Shopify has published give a good sense of how fast things are moving, as long as you read them with the right timestamp in mind. According to comments from president Harley Finkelstein on the first-quarter 2026 earnings call, traffic to its stores from AI channels had multiplied eightfold year over year, and orders from AI-driven searches nearly thirteenfold. That pace has since slowed: on the second-quarter 2026 earnings call in early August, the company instead reported AI traffic and orders having tripled year over year, still strong growth, but noticeably less dramatic. The two measures don't cover exactly the same scope, but the direction is the same: AI's share of Shopify sales is growing fast, at a pace that's leveling off.

Canada isn't leading the pack on enterprise AI, but the gap is closing, and agentic commerce is only just starting to include the country in its rollout plans.

According to Statistics Canada, the share of Canadian businesses using AI has tripled since the second quarter of 2024, and 27.8% of businesses with 100 or more employees reported having used AI over the past 12 months as of the second quarter of 2026. Deloitte, for its part, confirms that Canadian business adoption of AI is lagging behind global peers, even though the foundations (talent, research) are solid.

On the online shopping side, Quebec consumers' appetite is beyond doubt. How an SMB Can Get Ready for Agentic Commerce

You don't need to overhaul everything at once. Here are the concrete steps that prepare an online store without wasting budget on technology that's still unsettled.

  • Structure your product listings: IDs, prices, availability, and variants need to be machine-readable (Schema.org structured data, up-to-date CSV or JSON feeds), not just readable by a human customer
  • Check whether Agentic Storefronts is active for you: if you're on Shopify and selling in the U.S., it's probably already on. If not, go to Sales Channels > Agentic to turn it on and choose your channels
  • Check how your brand shows up in AI answers: ask ChatGPT or Gemini to recommend a product in your category and see whether your business comes up
  • Don't rush into a full technical integration: the standards are still changing fast (the Instant Checkout pullback proves it), better to stay agile than sink a big investment into a protocol that could be revised
  • Review your terms of sale to explicitly cover purchases initiated by an agent on a customer's behalf, particularly around returns and disputes

What to Remember Before You Get Started

Agentic e-commerce isn't a stable reality yet, and that's exactly why it's worth paying attention to now rather than waiting until it becomes unavoidable. OpenAI pulling Instant Checkout after six months, and Shopify's growth rate slowing between Q1 and Q2 2026, both show that even the biggest players are moving by trial and error.
